Locomotion over the water by the power of the wind has been practiced for many centuries. At the same time, the development of sailing ships is not yet complete; on the contrary, it has gained new momentum in recent years with the development of high-speed sailing. In this lecture, we will shed light on sailing from the physics perspective. In particular, we will discuss what forces determine propulsion, what determines the speed and direction of a sailboat, why it is possible to sail against the wind and faster than the wind.
