The lecture presents a new approach to the quantum physics of the electromagnetic field and its interaction with matter. Aspects that add flavour to the life of a researcher will also be discussed. These include, for example, surprising cross-connections in our field, unexpected analogies to high-energy physics, but also the experience that gaining scientific knowledge is not a linear process, but involves many detours and pitfalls.
