FAQ

What is the orientation exam?

The orientation exam is an important part of your studies in the Bachelor of Physics programme. Its purpose is to check at an early stage whether you have the necessary prerequisites for the programme. The examination consists of different tests that you have to pass depending on your chosen specialisation (applied or mathematical specialisation). If you fail the last resit of any of the orientation exams, you will be considered to have failed the orientation exam definitively. In this case, you will lose your right to sit the examination for the degree programme.

What happens if I fail the orientation exams

If you do not pass the orientation exams by the start of the lecture period of the fourth semester, even after three attempts, you will be considered to have failed the orientation exams definitively. This means that you will no longer be admitted to the programme. However, if there is a good reason why you were unable to meet the deadline, you can apply for an extension to take the exam.

How many attempts do I have for the orientation exam?

You have three attempts in total. If you fail an exam on the first attempt, you can retake it three times. You can retake the minor subject examinations as many times as you like. If you have not passed the exams, including the three re-sits, by the beginning of the lecture period of the fourth semester, the orientation exam will be considered to have been definitively failed and you will lose your right to take the exam.

I would like to register my Bachelor's thesis next semester. Who do I need to contact?

If you would like to start your Bachelor's thesis, you must first agree a topic with a supervisor of your choice. You must then submit an application for admission to the Bachelor's thesis to the Departmental Examinations Office (see forms and information sheets above left). The application for admission to the Bachelor's thesis must be submitted in writing to the Examinations Office before the start of the processing period. The processing time for the Bachelor's thesis is 3 months in total.

How do I register for an exam?

You can register for written exams via ZEuS.
For oral examinations, first arrange a consultation with a professor and inform the Prüfungsverwaltung (1 to 2 weeks before the exam).
